Johnson & Johnson to pay $72 Million in Talcum Powder Liability Claim

Johnson & Johnson to pay $72 Million in Talcum Powder Liability Claim

A Missouri state jury found Johnson & Johnson liable for the ovarian cancer death of Jacqueline Fox, resulting in $72 million in damages awarded to her family.

The Johnson & Johnson talcum powder products which were used by Fox were Baby Powder and Shower to Shower. Used for feminine hygiene purposes, both of these products were reportedly used for several decades.

Her family was awarded by jurors in the St. Louis circuit court $10 million in actual damages and $62 million in punitive damages. They claimed that the health giant failed to adequately warn that its talc-based products could potentially cause cancer in order to increase sales.

Attorney Jared Beasley, one of the Fox family’s lawyers, stated that Johnson & Johnson “knew as far back as the 1980s of the risk.” However, the company resorted to “lying to the public, lying to the regulatory agencies.”

Nearly 1,000 cases have been filed in Missouri state court, along with an additional 200 in New Jersey.
